Wednesday Wedding Tips - 9 Tips for a Great Wedding Slide Show

Did you know that nearly 80% of all wedding guests are bored out of their minds while watching a wedding slide show? Perhaps you’ve been to a wedding reception where the slide show went on and on and on and on……

The Music Place has compiled 9 proven tips that will help enhance your wedding photo montage. Here they are listed below in no particular order.

1. Keep it Short: The ideal length of a slide show should be no longer than 3 songs or 8 minutes in length. During this time you can generally show 75-100 different pictures. Most guests will have an attention span of 5 minutes top. Anything longer than 8 minutes should be presented as presentation. Longer slide shows will work better if you keep them running in the background. Placing a small plasma screen or digital photo frame by the bar generally works best.

2. Audience: Be sure to know who your intended audience will be. Since you’ll be showing your presentation at a wedding reception it would be a good idea to include pictures of your guests and not just images of you and your husband or wife.

3. Choose Quality Images: When projecting images with a projector you’ll want to make sure you have good quality images. Older images that have to be scanned should be scanned at the highest resolution possible. Anything less and you’ll loose a good chunk of the quality during projection.

4. Trigger a Response: Each photo in your slide show should try to trigger an emotional response. Whether it’s a photo of the groom’s funny haircut in 8thgrade or a photo of a grandmother who is no longer with us, they image should each make your guests happy, laugh or tear up. Now that doesn’t mean each picture has to be a tear-jerker but they should try to invoke an emotion response.

5. Chronological Order: Avoid too much artistic depth or complicated narrative structures. Chronological from birth to present generally works best.

6. Avoid Descriptions: Try to avoid using a lot of text. Dates and places are ok, but ditch the goofy captions. Captions will cause your guests to read and they may miss the actual image you’re trying to present.

7. Add Video Clips: Do you have any home videos sitting around? If possible, try to add a few 15-20 second clips into the show. It’s a great way to spice up your presentation and your guests will also enjoy it.

8. Add Motion: If you’re using PowerPoint to develop your slide show you probably won’t be able to do this, but adding subtle motion to your image can add depth and character to the image. It also brings focus to the important things in the photo. A movie editing program like Sony Vegas or Animoto can do these things for you.

9. TEST! This is definitely the most important tip. Do you remember the days when your math teacher used to struggle with the overhead projector? Don’t create a moment like that at your wedding reception! Be sure to have everything setup and tested before any of your guests arrive.

Wedding receptions are often a sit-down meal with a portioned entrée, starch and vegetable beside it. Or a buffet with a carving station and an array of salads and sides. But ideas in what a wedding reception "should be" are changing. Today's brides and grooms are more involved in the menu planning than ever thanks in large part to information available on the internet and TV networks like the Style Channel and the Food Network.
Here are the 5 top reception food trends I am seeing:

1. Multicultural – Bringing together diverse histories, ethnic backgrounds, & travels.

2. Swanky Cocktail Receptions – this type of reception includes action stations, tapas selection (small plates) & butler passed appetizers. A cocktail reception is not a new idea, but it has come back into focus a little more because of the economy.

3. Miniature Foods – Mini cheeseburgers, mini chili dogs, mini cones of seasoned French fries, & soup shooters served in shot glasses , mini ice cream cones or shakes“are quite the rage right now” All of the food is recognizable with a twist, but makes it fun and exciting for wedding guests.

4. Healthier Eating & Organic – Keeping the food as local as possible – offering your guests lighter and healthier options.

5. Comfort Food – Creating comfort foods, with a chic twist. Items like macaroni and cheese but made with gruyere and fontina cheese w/truffle oil, baked ziti w/sundried tomatoes and pancetta, mini meatloafs, wasabi mashed potatoes. Your guests will clean their plates.

Just as with all of the other elements of a customized wedding, reception menus reflect the bride and groom’s personal style and that is what Chic Eats Catering likes to capture. 1. Plan early and plan ahead for your honeymoon!

One of the worst pieces of advice I read in modern bridal magazines is the proposed time-line for planning your honeymoon...most say to begin planning your trip of a lifetime 4-6 months out from your wedding date. WRONG!!!

Think about it. If you need to plan your wedding day and all the details involved at least a year or more out (which is just one day and a few hours of your life!), then why in the world would you not begin planning your honeymoon and all the details involved with travel...which averages 6 nights and 7 days!?!? It makes no logical sense. By the time you start thinking about your honeymoon, your budget has been eaten up by deposits to wedding vendors, and you don't have much left over.

My advice is to begin planning your honeymoon one year in advance, 9 months in advance at the latest. Flights are released approximately 11 months prior to a departure date, and waiting until the last minute does not gaurantee a good deal, but rather the bottom-of-the-barrel flight times, basically, what is left over from all the other travelers who beat you to the punch.

Resorts, coveted room categories, and excursions also sell out...so do not delay!

Your honeymoon is the first adventure you will embark on together as husband and wife, and making it everything you've always dreamed of is possible with ample planning time.

2) Make sure you set aside enough money out of your wedding budget for a spectacular honeymoon!

Travel is not cheap. The misleading advertisements you see on tv and the internet are not what the bottom line is. A good, realistic budget for an entire week in the Caribbean or Mexico (the two biggest hot-spots for honeymooners), at a quality all-inclusive resort, round-trip flights from the Midwest, a good room category, 1-2 excursions to fully experience the destination, taxes, gratuities, transfers, and trip insurance will cost you approximately $3,000-4,000. Depending on what matters most to you, this price will fluctuate. Set this money aside and promise yourselves you will not spend it on anything except your honeymoon! Your wedding day will fly by, filled with wonderful memories for sure, but your honeymoon will last for days and days...and the memories you make on your trip of a lifetime will be exceptional and worth every penny you invested. No one ever regrets spending a couple hundred dollars more to receive something of real value...but they do regret not spending it if their trip was below par in expectation!

3) Get your passports...now!

You can get a passport photo taken at any CVS Pharmacy for less than $10. Then grab your fiance's hand, your photos, and your birth certificates and journey into the downtown post office together, where you'll find a passport office. You'll also need your social security number. Applications for passports cost approximately $100 each, and are valid for 10 years. Make sure, brides-to-be, that you apply for your passport in your maiden name. This name must match exactly what is on your valid driver's license, and since you most likely will be whisked away to a tropical paradise right after becoming a brand new "Mrs.", you won't have time to change your name and all your travel bookings will be in your maiden name. Passport, booking names, and all spellings must match exactly...or you aren't going anywhere! Do not delay in applying as passports take a few weeks up to a few months to process, depending on the season.

4) Go somewhere neither of you have ever been before!

Nowadays, many couples live together and also have taken vacations together. There are many times when clients tell us, "We want to go here because we've been there and had so much fun and just loved it!" That's wonderful, and we are so happy that you found a fantastic destination together...but this is your honeymoon, not an annual vacation. It's completely different. Let us recommend some amazing destinations you've never been to and open your minds to experiencing somewhere new. The memories you will create together in a new locale on this trip of a lifetime will never compare to anywhere you've ever been together before. The feeling of a honeymoon is entirely different than any other vacation...it's all about the two of you, beginning your lives together, romance, adventure, being alone, exploring a new destination and culture, and just letting it soak in that you are now your own family unit...a brand new husband and wife team!

There are a ton of things to think about when planning a wedding and no doubt, your photographer is one of those things. In almost any wedding magazine you can find a list of questions to ask your potential photographer, so I'm going to keep it simple. Here are three things you should definitely be thinking about when meeting with your potential photographer.

1. What is your budget?
This is the most basic thing you need to think about before contacting photographers. There are a ton of photographers out there... each with their own style and pricing list. With the economy the way it is, it's important that any couple getting married really think about how much they want to spend and then stick with it! Knowing how much you want to spend will also prevent you from 'falling in love' with a photographer that is out of your price range resulting in you being disappointed (or overspending) later.

2. Once you have an idea of how much you want to spend, start thinking about what you want.
Do you want an album? Prints? Digital files? How long do you want your photographer to be there on the day of the ceremony? Do you want them to be there while you're getting ready until the last guest leaves? Because photographers can vary so drastically in price, what they offer can vary just as much. You don't need to know it all and your photographer should be more than willing to sit down with you to figure out these details, but having a vague idea of what you want from your photographer is a very good place to start.

3. Are you comfortable with you photographer?
This is the MOST important thing to think about when hiring a photographer. This is the one vendor that you will be spending the majority of your day with... you definitely want to get a long with them and feel as though you can be yourself! One of the best ways to test out the client/ photographer relationship is by doing an engagement session. This way you can see their style and really get a sense of how you and your partner will interact with your photographer on the big day. If an engagement session is out of the budget or you are opting to not take engagement photos, then ask to grab a coffee with your potential photog or at the very least talk with your photographer on the phone. Just be sure that you feel comfortable with them!

Okay, I know I said I'd stick with three tips, but as Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City once said, "sometimes a girl just needs a half". I've already told you that photographers vary in price and the services they offer... but they can also vary dramatically in their style of photography. Traditional, posed, editorial, photojournalistic... these are just a handful of styles you will run into when looking at photographers. Once you've found a photographer with a portfolio you like, make sure you ask to look at a sample wedding, beginning to end, to make sure that their style matches what you are looking for. After all... this IS one part of your wedding that will last forever.

As technology and ways of communicating evolve, "personalization" is removed and decisions are made by not asking questions or even speaking with businesses that you are entrusting with your special day. We encourage all brides (and grooms) to ask the following questions over the phone or in person when researching the best DJ for their wedding (they may find they have a nice website, but no personality or worse yet, no experience.) The below questions will help give you an "apples to apples" comparison and separate the companies from each other.

10 Important Questions To Ask Your Potential DJ

We understand how crucial it is to choose the right D.J. for your special day. Information is the key to that decision, but what kind of questions should you ask? Questions, such as "Do you take breaks and how many?" while valid, will not distinguish one entertainer from another. Take the time to ask some extra questions. Be sure about your choices before you make them. Your decision can make or break your entire wedding reception. We've taken the time and assembled the 10 best questions you should ask before hiring your entertainment.

1. Are they available?
Begin your phone call by indicating the date, time, and location of your special event. If they're not available, no sense talking much further!

2. Does the DJ know the proper etiquette for your type of party?
With sufficient experience, a professional DJ will be able to act as your Master of Ceremonies and guide you smoothly through your celebration from start to finish, allowing you to relax and enjoy the party.

With experience comes confidence and knowledge. Many things can happen during an event...some are expected, others are not. The experienced professional has the ability to handle eventualllities that may arise before they become problems and ensures that the evening runs flawlessly.

3. Are you insured?
Responsible business owners will carry liability insurance in order to protect their business as well as their consumers. Also, many venues require proof of liability. Ask for proof of liability insurance. In Tune D.J. Service, Inc. will provide you with their certificate upon request.

4. Will you play requests and discuss music selection ahead of time?
A versatile DJ should listen to your suggestions, provide feedback and play from your desired song list. While requests are always welcomed, we rely on our discretion, experience and your input as to what songs or genres you may not want played. However, we cannot know your preferences without sitting with you in consultation and so this is strongly encouraged.

5. Do you use Professional Equipment?
You are paying money for professional service and your DJ should have state-of-the-art equipment and the knowledge to operate it. Make sure it's professional grade equipment, not home stereo or consumer grade. As professionals, they should have made the investment in quality equipment. Ask them what speakers, and amplifiers they use. Some of the better names in professional audio are: Electro-Voice, Mackie, JVC, QSC, Cerwin Vega, Rane, Behringer, Pioneer, Shure, Samson, Denon, and Crown.

6. Do you provide backup equipment at my event?
Even professional equipment can fail on occasion, so it is important to know whether your DJ has extra components, or hopefully another entire sound system available to them. Any number of circumstances may arise between the time you book your DJ and the date of your event.

Usually, only the top-notch pros invest the extra money to ensure that everything works on your event date. Booking a reliable DJ is a very important decision for the success of your event.

7. How much time do you allow for set-up?
Punctuality is a necessity. Most DJ's arrive at least two hours prior to the start time you've given them. Your D.J. should ideally be set-up and in-place before your first guest walks through the door.

8. Do you provide a written agreement?
Make certain the DJ has a written agreement and that everything you expect of them is in it. If they refuse or only provide verbal assurances, then get up and leave. No one remembers everything agreed upon months later when the actual event takes place. An agreement protects you. Have them list what their overtime charge is in case you decide to run late. You don't want any surprises there. Make sure all correct dates, times, address, phone numbers, and deposits are listed.

The standard deposit for entertainment services is 50%.

9. Will you be suitably dressed for our occasion?
Specify they type of apparel that your Disc Jockey is expected to wear for your occasion. Formal attire or coat and tie are the most popular forms of attire.

10. How much do they charge?
DJ rates vary based on talent, experience, emcee ability, service, coordination, equipment needed, music knowledge, mixing ability and personality. The cheapest price is not always the best deal, especially if you are planning a wedding. As a matter of fact, in hindsight, surveys conclude that nearly 90% of brides would have gladly spent more money on their disc jockey and made it their number one priority.

A full-service disc jockey company will normally invest 18 to 40 hours for your special event if it may appear that you are only paying for "five hours". Consultations, music, purchasing and editing, preparation, set-up and teardown, education on other business related endeavors add up to the overall success of your special occasion

I absolutely LOVE the Junebug Weddings Blog. This weekend, while I was catching up on my blog reading, I came across these totally awesome boutonnieres

Like Junebug says,

Wedding boutonnieres are an often overlooked accessory when it comes to a groom's wedding day style, but it's amazing how much personality can be packed into such a tiny little space! Friday Fun Find - DIY Candy Favors/Placecards

Isn't this the cutest for a Spring wedding? Martha Stewart Weddings has all kinds of great DIY projects and this one is one of my favorites!

The directions are very simple: sugar-coated Jordan almonds are used to look like robins' eggs in a delicate faux nest and parchment paper threaded among them acts as a simple place card. The almonds are available from candy stores or online in a range of colors (but I just love the blue!). The nests can be found at floral-supply or craft stores. Then, simply cut 3/4-inch-wide strips of parchment paper long enough to reach across the nest, and write a name on each strip. Cutting a inverted "V" on the ends of the paper gives it an extra special look!

Today's bride has a lot of exciting choices when it comes to invitations. It can be very overwhelming.

My best suggestion to brides is to start with a budget. The biggest mistake I see couples make when setting their budget they don't take into account all the stationery needs and make this part of the budget too small.

Here are things to keep in mind when setting your budget:

Save the Date plus postage
Invitations plus postage for the reply and outer envelope
Extra cards to send with invitations for a map, directions and accommodations
Programs
Menu Cards
Place cards
Table Numbers
Guest Welcome Booklet
Labels for favors, or water bottles and other gifts
Thank You Cards

I mention postage because I think that is overlooked until the invitations need to be mailed and it can be sticker shock. The more layers to an invitation and the more weight the higher the cost of postage. If you have a bow or other embellishment and it creates bulk to the envelope that will also cost more. With the rising cost of postage this can add up.

A good start in picking out your invitations is to have a color in mind. Most use the colors that will be used in their wedding. Next decide if your wedding will have a theme or a particular look and choose an invitation that best reflects your special day.

I always encourage couples to make their invitations personal to them, after all it's their special day. The invitation sets the tone for the entire wedding so make sure it makes a great first impression!

Fascinators are head coverings, very popular in the 1920s made from lace, feathers, beads, pearls and crystals. The were worn at occasions such as weddings and other glamorous occasions. Unfortunately, by the 1970’s fascinators had become passe’.

Luckily, in the early 21st century, fascinators made a comeback. A fascinator may be worn instead of a hat to occasions where hats were traditionally worn—such as weddings—or as an evening accessory, when it may be called a cocktail hat. It is generally worn with fairly formal attire.

Carrie Bradshaw made fascinators quite popular in Sex in the City:

Wearing a fascinator for your wedding can make a real statement if you'd like to add a bit of color or a fun statement to your wedding attire. 5. DO make sure you (or your maid of honor, friend, mom) have practiced bustling the dress or consider hiring a dresser to help.

Hiring a wedding coordinator was once a luxury. Today, for many couples, it's a necessity. Now that you’ve got the ring, it’s time to find the dress! With millions of dresses out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed! Here are a few ideas to help your find the perfect one!

Lazaro gown

When you first start looking, don’t be afraid to look through magazines and bookmark every dress you find online. You’ll be amazed that even though they may look very different, they share some of the same qualities.

Once you narrowed down your search, RESEARCH, find out how much the dresses are and find stores that carry the line. You’ll be surprised that the prices for the same dress vary store to store.

Trunk Shows are a great way to get the dress of your dreams at a lower price! These are special events, which are held at bridal boutiques to showcase a designer’s new line and bring in some dresses the boutique does not normally carry. The best thing about Trunk Shows is that typically the designer’s collection is usually 10-15% off the original price!

Cymbeline Gown

Once you find out where the dresses are sold, make an appointment and be sure to ask when the designer’s next trunk show is. Usually you have to make an appointment for Trunk Shows, so if you can, go ahead and do it. It’s a great idea to go and try dresses on before the Trunk Show, so you know if you love the dress or not. If you find the dress you love go back during the Trunk Show to buy the dress, because most stores only recognize the “sale” price during the trunk show, be prepared to make your first payment when you are there.

Some dresses are only available at Trunk Shows, be sure to ask if your dress is something that they have in the store all the time, or if it is only available at the Trunk show. If your dress is not available at the store, request that the dress be brought for the Trunk Show.

Trunk Shows not only offer dresses for less than retail, they also offer a more customized fit. Because Trunk Shows are not actually a “sale” don’t be afraid to ask for 15% off if what they offer is 10%, you never know if you don’t ask! Good Luck and Happy (wedding dress) Shopping!

Let’s face it; planning a wedding is no simple task, but looking great on your ‘big day’ is something every bride can achieve by following a few simple steps! Not every salon works with wedding parties on a regular basis and working with true professionals on your wedding day will ensure that everyone is exactly where they are supposed to be, exactly when they are supposed to be there! (Looking their best!)

Book your Salon: Depending on the popularity of your wedding date, booking your salon at least 6 months in advance is our recommendation. This way you can be sure to get the time you need with the stylist you want! Master Designers, who are known for their ‘Special Occasion’ look, book up quickly! Reserve appointments for you, your family and your wedding party at this time. When you are booking appointments remember to factor in travel time and changes of time if you or any of your guests are not from the area to ensure timeliness.

Haircolor & Conditioning Treatments: 6 weeks to go........this is no time to ignore your hair! Your stylist should suggest a conditioning treatment for you to use at home once a week until the week before your wedding. An analysis of your hair will determine what you need- moisture or strength or both! At this color appointment you should be 100% satisfied with your color and special attention should be paid to color placement and formula.

Trial Run Hair and MakeUp: Schedule a trial run for your hair and makeup approximately 4-6 weeks before your wedding. You don’t want any surprises at the last minute! If you have a certain ‘look’ in mind, bring a picture or two! This gives your stylist and makeup artist a base to work from and avoids any misunderstandings. Your trial run is a must, a reputable salon will insist on one! This gives you the opportunity to make changes if necessary! Bring your head piece, veil or a sample veil from your bridal shop, they are accustomed to loaning these out and your stylist will appreciate knowing how the head piece or veil will attach before beginning your style.

Waxing or Sugaring: If you regularly use waxing or sugaring for hair removal, you can wait up until the week before the wedding to see your esthetician. If you are new to the world of waxing we suggest two weeks in advance. You don’t want to run the risk of blemishes marring your flawless look!

Haircolor & a Trim: Two weeks and counting! I know, I know.......you’ve been growing out your hair and you just can’t bear to cut it! Your ends need a trim; those ends don’t need to make an appearance on the big day! Remind your stylist of your upcoming nuptials so she is sure to only dust the ends! During this appointment a retouch of your color will ensure a fresh, but not over done look.

Manicure & Pedicure: Mani and Pedis are best with friends and family! The day before your wedding consider scheduling a ‘girls day out’ at the salon! This is a great time to include everyone.......who doesn’t love a little pampering? Enjoy the people who surround you, it’s time to soak it all in! (many salons offer delectable treats or allow you to bring in your own!)

The Big Day: The day of your wedding, hair and makeup are the only services you should be receiving. All of the decisions have been made; your salon is on board and knows your schedule for the morning. The hard work is done! This is where you sit back, relax and enjoy the day!

Wednesday Wedding Tip - Making your older guests comfortable at the reception

Here’s a wedding tip that could help your older guests enjoy themselves at your reception. Do not seat you older guests next to or in front of the area your DJ will be set up during the wedding reception. Your DJ should be on constant watch during the course of a wedding reception to ensure the music is just right, and never too loud, but seating your older guests in front the area where the DJ is location is a bad idea. Typically even if the volume levels are low, the older guests sometimes may feel it is too loud, and when it is time to turn it up for dancing or intros, it will be very uncomfortable for them.

No, I'm not looking for a husband -- I've had one for 25 years this year! This post was prompted by several phone calls we received over the course of the last weeks asking about marriage ceremonies in Indiana; wondering who can perform such a ceremony and how to find someone.

If you don't have a home church or a minister or if you would prefer a civil ceremony, Brides a la mode can help you find the perfect officiant for your wedding vows. The law In the State of Indiana says

"Marriages may be solemnized by any of the following:

(1) A member of the clergy of a religious organization (even if the cleric does not perform religious functions for an individual congregation), such as a minister of the gospel, a priest, a bishop, an archbishop, or a rabbi.

(2) A judge.

(3) A mayor, within the mayor's county.

(4) A clerk or a clerk-treasurer of a city or town, within a county in which the city or town is located.

(5) A clerk of the circuit court."

What if you would like a family member to particpate in the ceremony? Indiana law allows "Any person may conduct or participate in conducting a marriage ceremony. However, a marriage may be solemnized only by a person listed above."

You may remember several years ago Star Jones created quite a stir when she asked wedding professionals to donate their services for her wedding in exchange for promotion. At the time I thought it was tacky and a celebrity "stunt".

Flash forward to 2009. I was reading the holiday edition of Catersource magazine and came across an article about the bride who asked her caterer to sponsor her wedding in exchange for advertising the caterer's business by putting their business cards at each place setting.

Apparently, the bride got this idea from a morning TV show. While I am all for looking for creative ways to save money on your wedding, I think this is totally over the top and completely inappropriate. Your wedding should be about celebrating with your family and friends in doing so in a way that you and your family can afford.

Carly Roney, editor in chief of TheKnot.com summed it up, "have hamburgers and hot dogs before you have a sponsored wedding."

I'm curious what you think. Is there ever a time when it's OK to ask someone to sponsor your wedding in exchange for advertising?

Wait, wait... Don't trash that dress!

The "Trash the dress" fad had been around for a few years now, and although I understand the creative concept behind it, I could never get past the idea of ruining a wedding gown. Seemed a little odd to me not just because of the expense and labor that goes into producing these dresses, but all the thought that goes into selecting the gown. A gorgeous gown can inspire the whole tone of your wedding day. Seems a shame to just toss it aside.

Earlier this year Brides a la mode was made aware of an organization that helps women and men who are losing their battle with breast cancer, Brides Against Breast Cancer. You can donate your gown and bring a moment of joy into the world of someone for whom a cure is too late. Brides Against Breast Cancer has over 32 shows all over the country, providing these brides with a beautiful choice of gowns at significant savings. If care is used, artistic photographs can still be shot while preserving the integrity of the gown. Why not pass it on to another eager bride?

Q & A Monday: Where have we been? And what's new?

You may have been wondering what happened to our daily blogs since the last time you heard from us was way back on October 26.

Well lots of things have been happening. First of all, shortly after blogging on October 26, I managed to fall and break my right arm in three places, requiring surgery and a four day hospital stay. Since I am right-handed, my ability to type has been severely limited. That is until I discovered voice recognition software. So, now that physical therapy is moving along and I have somewhat mastered the art of voice recognition, we are back on track.

We are busy preparing our studio for the holidays and excited about our upcoming "Second Sunday" event on Sunday, December 13. In case you didn't know, on the second Sunday of each month we host a mini bridal show featuring a number of our wedding professionals. On December 13, our event will have a holiday theme. Brides grooms and their families can stop by between noon and 3:00 PM to meet one on one with our wedding professionals and enjoy some holiday cheer.

We're excited to welcome our newest member, The Riverside Terrace and look forward to having them participate in one of our monthly events in the near future.

Q&A Monday - Contracts, who needs 'em?

Q: My wedding professionals want me to sign contracts, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for to protect myself. Can you help?

Contracts can be very intimidating, but you are right that they are in place not only to protect the wedding professional, but to protect you. If you approach each contract with that in mind, you will most likely end up with a contract that serves those purposes.

Please don't insult your professional by asking for contract revisions that make the contract "tilted" towards you, but also be mindful of contracts that do not offer you any protection if your professional fails to perform.

Here are some things to look for in your contracts:

Pricing (make sure the price in the contract is the price you agreed on with your professional)
Payment plans (you don't want to void your contract because you missed a payment)
Cancellation policies (who can cancel and how)
Dates and times (make sure your rental time includes time for set up and tear down)
Contract amendments (your contract should state how changes can be made and who can make changes)

Contracts are one area where an event planner can be invaluable. They have worked with many reputable wedding professionals and can help you understand contract wording. But remember, YOU (the bride/groom) will sign the contracts and ultimately be responsible.

Friday Fun Find, a "nest" for your ring

If there is one word of wisdom I can impart on brides-to-be, it is: BUDGET! Without a budget, you can easily be overwhelmed by all of the services and products available and, before you know it, you have spent (or committed to spend) much more money than you have -- you don't want to start your marriage with the stress of bills you can't pay!

Once you have a budget figure, the next step is to decide what is most important to you and start allocating money to each category. If you have a modest budget and your heart is set on a Vera Wang gown, you may need to either scale down the size of your wedding or research alternatives like consignment stores to find the perfect gown.

Q&A Monday - Its a hairy situation

What is your advice to brides who are thinking of how to wear their hair on wedding day?

Our experienced staff will work with you on this.....but we suggest letting your face shape determine how you will wear your hair for your wedding. Along with your faceshape you will want to consider the style of your dress.

Regal, romantic, retro, relaxed and red carpet: these are a few of the descriptions I hear when discussing an overall image with our brides. This is really important in establishing the final look and feel. In general, a bride with a rounder face will look sleeker with an updo, and a bit of height at the crown. This elongates the face giving it a leaner look. A flattering look for someone with a long, lean face would include a hairstyle with soft, loose curls. This will give the bride a fuller look on the sides to create a more balanced look.

Another factor when considering your choice of hairstyle is whether the bride would like to have her neck covered or not. Some brides would much rather that she doesn't need to tuck or fix any bit of hair for photos through the Wedding day, while others feel very bare without the comfort of hair around the shoulder. Half-up-half-down is a popular compromise.

Last week, I had the good fortune to attend Engage09 The Encore at the ultra-fabulous Wynn Encore hotel in Las Vegas. This gathering of luxury wedding professionals was more than amazing and I am so excited to be able to bring back some great ideas from the likes of Evenista Marcy Blum, cake guru Sylvia Weinistock and more to the Michiana community.

I learned about today's fun find at Engage 09 Encore and just had to share this!

Wednesday Wedding Wisdom - Do yourself a favor

This week's wisdom is from Nina Calloway at about.com:

Wedding favors can be a thoughtful way of saying thank you to your guests. But far too often they're a meaningless knickknack. Your guests don't need a candy dish, or a little silver bell.

Don't think their cute place card holder doubles as a favor; what are they going to do with one place card? And do you really want a plastic Frisbee with your friends' wedding date on it?

You're going to spend a lot of money on things that will just collect dust, or end up in the trash. I think it's far better to not give favors, or to make a donation to a charity. But cute favors include ones that are personal to the bride and groom. You might give food favors from the city you live in, or a box of your very favorite chocolates.

One of my favorite ideas is a breakfast bag. Send guests home with some beautiful muffins, a couple of good quality tea bags, and perhaps a little pot of jam or honey. The next morning they'll be sure to enjoy your treat as they reminisce about everything that happened.

So, do yourself, your pocketbook and your guests a "favor" when choosing your favors!

Something that has been fun to watch at local wedding receptions, is guests enjoying new, unique services that give them something to do along with dinner and dancing. Brides and grooms are thinking outside-the-box to make their special day an unforgettable experience for all. How nice it is to be served a made-to-order coffee drink, or how fun to grab your friends and get your photo taken in a "real" photobooth!

Brides a la mode is lucky to be working with American Espresso Catering, Flashy Photo Booths and S&S Photo Booths. All three have participated in our events and were amazing!

At a local wedding last weekend a hot-dog cart was brought out towards the end of the reception. Guests LOVED it! What will they think of next?

Q: It doesn't really matter what kind of invitation I send, does it? After all, as long as peopleknow the date, time and location, what else do they need?

A: Here is the answer from Brides a la mode's own Joya Helmuth from Spark Fine Papers:

Realize that the invitation (and save the date, should you choose to send one) is setting the tone for your entire event. It's the only thing that the guests receive prior to walking in the door. They should not only get a sense of your personal style, but also what to expect at the wedding - how formal or casual it will be, things like that.

Also think about the other items you might need, such as ceremony programs, menus, thank you notes, and the like. We recommend that you plan ahead to coordinate these items with the invitation to make everything cohesive. We like to call it your stationery wardrobe, complete with accessories!

Wedding Professionals Step Up to Help a local Couple

C'mon over to Brides a la mode (1217 E. University Drive in Granger's City Plaza) between 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29 and join with local wedding professionals in helping Army Sgt. Chris Monjeau and his new bride Mary recover just some of what they lost when their house was burglarized while they were celebrating at their wedding reception on September 12.

Here is just SOME of what you can expect:

Food and drink provided by Chic Eats Catering, Trio's, the Landing Catering and Indulgence Pastry Shop

Professional photographer Matthew Whitlock will be taking pictures you can use on your holiday cards or for your professional headshots. Hair and makeup professionals from Nichoals J Salon and Spa and Camellia Cosmetics will be on hand to make sure you look your best.

Chris Monjeau and Mary Smith of South Bend, Ind., said “I do.” Little did they know that the joy of their wedding day would end when they returned home to find that their house had been burglarized, causing them to lose nearly $10,000 worth of electronics, jewelry and other valuable items.

On Tuesday, September 29, area wedding professionals will join together at Brides a la mode to hold a fundraiser for Chris and Mary called “Christmas in September.” The event, taking place from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., will feature a number of ways the local community can come together to help this couple recover some of what they lost during the robbery.

For a nominal donation of $5 per person or a maximum of $15 per family, professional photographer Matthew Whitlock of Zeta Alpha Studio will take portrait shots which can be used for holiday cards. Hair and make professionals from Nicholas J Salon and Spa , the Beehive Salon, Camellia, the Cosmetic Store and GabGlam will be on hand to ensure everyone in the family looks their best for the pictures. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed for the holidays to get in the Christmas spirit (and to make sure the pictures look right for holiday cards) – it really will look like “Christmas in September” at Brides a la mode!

Overwhelmed brides will soon have a new place to call home. The Brides a la mode studio on Cleveland Road is closed while we move into a new, larger and more luxurious space in Granger's City Plaza.

On September 13, 2009, Brides a la mode will open the doors (and covered windows) to its new location at 1217 E. University Drive in Granger. The new space is currently “wrapped up” and will be unveiled to reveal a welcoming, luxurious studio that will quickly become a wedding-planning destination for area brides.

The Brides a la mode “Grand UnVEILing” will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 1217 E. University Drive in City Plaza.

In addition, a number of preferred vendors will be showcasing their products and services as part of Brides a la mode’s monthly “Second Sunday” event. Brides, grooms and their families are cordially invited to check out Brides a la mode’s beautiful new space, stop by the wedding professionals’ displays and even take in a trunk show at Andrea’s Bridal in the same shopping complex.

On Sunday, August 9, Brides a la mode is offering a sneak preview of our brand new and luxurious home in Granger's City Plaza during our monthly "Second Sunday" event. While the new studio won't open until mid-September, we are excited to give our friends and colleagues an advance look.

Please stop by our new location, just across the street from Ruth's Chris and between Verandah Shoes and J'Ross Salon on Sunday, August 9 between noon and 3 p.m. Trio's Restaurant will be providing food and libations, InTune DJ will be spinning some great tunes, Nicholas J Salon & Spa will be on hand to talk about wedding hairstyles, Monica Z Photography will show their style and give great tips on wedding photography and Time Flies Errand Service will give brides-to-be information on how they can handle those last minute errands during the weeks leading up to the wedding.

Candy a la mode

At last week's 2nd Sunday at a la mode, the Brides a la mode team put together this sample candy buffet to give our brides an idea of how they can use candy to carry out their wedding theme colors (ours had a preppy theme) and provide a fun favor for their guests.

Candy buffets are a fun and colorful way to treat your guests and carry out the theme of your wedding. If you decide to use a candy buffet, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Have an assortment of candies, wrapped and unwrapped. 5 or 6 different kinds is ideal
Use containers that are big enough to let your guests access the candy
You may need to do some separating to get the colors you want -- it is cheaper to buy a container of mixed colors and take the ones you need.
Vary the height of your display; use boxes under a pretty linen to create height and use containers of different sizes
Provide containers for your guests to use; but don't make them too big or your buffet will disappear quickly!
Add a thank you note to the candy bags
Consider not displaying the candy buffet until after dinner; we've seen more than one wedding where the candy buffet is nearly empty before the bride and groom arrive.

They are currently casting a show called "Quiero Mi Boda" on MTVtr3s which will feature couples from culturally different backgrounds between the ages of 18-28. One of the cultures has to be Latin and the wedding has to take place in 2009.

Brides a la mode welcomes Andrea's Bridal & Formal Wear

Last week we peeked into the front windows of Andrea's Bridal & Formal Wear. The store was not open yet, but we couldn't wait! Well now the wait is over. Today Andrea's was open for business and we got to see more of the area's newest, most elegant bridal and formal wear store!

If the manager's name, Melanie Brennan, sounds familiar, that's because she's the former owner of the Enchanted Cottage bridal salon. There are many local people who remember her expertise and excellent customer service.

Andrea's Bridal is located at 1229 E. University Drive, at City Plaza, Mishawaka. Hours are 11am - 7pm Monday through Thursday, 11am - 5pm Friday, and 10am - 2pm Saturday.

I'm "on duty" today from 10-2 at Brides a la mode. After yesterday's surprise visits (even though we were officially closed) by a bride and her mom and two wedding professionals, Cathy, Jill and I are reconsidering our hours.

During the few hours we held a private meeting at the Brides a la mode studio this morning we had a steady stream of guests pop in. Hmmmm... do we need to think about opening on Mondays? Maybe :)

Happy Friday!

What a sweet week it has been here at Brides a la mode. We have had lots of visitors including friends, brides, mothers of brides, interested wedding professionals and people who are just plain curious about what we're up to. To see such a response is just incredible!

If you missed our grand opening event don't worry. We plan to have at least one "open house" type event every month. We are also in talks with our many wedding professionals about additional weeknight events such as trunk shows and "how to" nights. We will be posting this information early next week so stay tuned!

Our services are open to any bride no matter where you are in your wedding planning. We had a mother of a July bride come in the other day who had everything set. The only thing she thought of last minute was hiring a seamstress to be on hand just in case there was an issue with the dress, such as a button popping off or to help bussle the dress. We have a seamstress, Rosemary Lott, with over 30 years experience who will be happy to help. Another bride visiting yesterday might also need Rosemary's services. She is making her own gown... she's still working on it... she's getting married on the 18th!

We also had a mother of the groom visit us looking for a dress shop to find a dress in a particular green color. We connected her with our various womens apparel vendors and off she went!

I have to laugh at the power of facebook! I sent a message out that I would be out at Brides a la mode all day Thursday so "come visit me" and boy lots of people did! Thanks everyone!

We'll be open today until 6pm and tomorrow, July 4th, from 10 - 2. Have a safe and happy holiday everyone!

First Official Day of Business is Today!

What an exciting Grand Opening event we had this past Sunday! The response has been amazing! We had several people even stop by and take a peek while we were cleaning everything up yesterday.

Yes, the buzz is out! The Brides a la mode grand opening is on June 28 and, thanks to our friends at WSBT and the South Bend Tribune' s Heidi Prescott, the buzz is growing!

Founders Cathy Dietz, Jill Kuharic and Kathy Strukel were interviewed by WSBT's Cari Peugeot on Saturday morning and were interviewed for an article in Heidi Prescott's "Market Basket" column in Sunday's South Bend Tribune.

The grand opening of Brides a la mode on June 28 is not going to be your typical grand opening event. Our faux wedding reception will be a true spectacle - complete with a gazebo and other fabulous decor from Merry Me!, a candy buffet from Ashley Troyer Events, food and drinks from some of the area's premier caterers, music from a professional DJ and even brides and bridesmaids dressed up and mingling with our guests.

This Tuesday, following the monthly Women Business Owners (WBOM) meeting, we hosted a "Sneak Peek" of Brides a la mode for WBOM members. We are excited to welcome WBOM member Wendy Taddeucci of Simply Organized, LLC as a preferred vendor. Wendy is excited to be able to share organizing tips with brides and help new couples set up an organized household! Look for a great seminar from Wendy in the months to come!

We were also thrilled that WBOM member and uber-gorgeous Hope Nutting has graciously agreed to model one of our gowns during the grand opening. Here's a sneak peek of Hope -- can you imagine how gorgeous she'll look when she gets her hair done & all made up by our preferred vendors? Can't wait!
